Arguments for a Java
23 in / 58 cm
In popular Quebec legends, a great charmer, perhaps the devil himself, arrives and seduces the bride or the belle of the evening during a party or wedding, be it for a single dance.
This sculpture is an amalgam of various forms of dance and periods: ballet dancer tights, a leg poised in a rock ‘n’ roll movement, a frock coat from classical dances, the bowing of minuets, the cuffs and bow tie of the Charleston. The intriguing charmer is trying to be persuasive and initiate a dance. The figure is a seducer, a classy eccentric. With a play of hands, this veritable dandy is extending his invitation to dance the Java.
