Caduceus

Caduceus

25 in / 63 cm

The rod of Mercury.
Caduceus, symbol of commerce and medicine, consists of a rod around which are entwined two snakes and above which are two wings. The points and spaces traced by the two reptiles represent the seven chakras. The central staff of the sculpture represents the spinal cord and the sphere symbolizes the brain.

The feathers on the ends of the wings are stylized to look like hands because through their hands, physicians work, make contact and transmit their knowledge.

Anecdote
This sculpture was designed for a chiropractor who was caring for my family. My trade as a sculptor often involves moving very heavy pieces that may have painful consequences.

Treatment
Bronze (25in/63cm) on granite; the central pole and wings have a black patina. The removable, 24-carat gold-plated knob gives access to the hollow central rod.
